Woolly Morgan or Clean Cut Morgan?

It’s spring time in the desert.  The prickly pears are blooming. The temperature has been unseasonably high. We’ve already hit a hundred once. I’m being forced to make a big decision that I don’t usually make until June.  Should I give Morgan his summer cut early?

I never clipped my dog’s fur before I moved to the desert. It was only after becoming friends with a fellow Golden Dad who clipped his dog that I was convinced to try it. Harley looked younger, seemed cooler and loved all the attention being doted on him.  I decided to give Willy the “Harley Cut.” He loved it for all the same reasons that Harley loved it and I loved it, too. Less hair. Easier to brush. Easier to get the sand and salt off him. Easier to get the stickers off him and any ticks he might have picked up. Then I made the decision to keep the Harley Cut year round for Willy.

Since Morgan was a rescue I changed my approach. He traditionally gets the Harley Cut in June. Since we didn’t have him as a puppy and see his fur grow out I wanted to admire him all woolly. Morgan has beautiful Farrah Faucet fur. All different shades of gold. I just thought he deserved to be handsome after all he’d been through. But with the heat coming on so soon this year I’m thinking of having him clipped earlier. Say this weekend.

Check out the photos below and then tell Morgan which you prefer – Woolly Morgan or Clean Cut Morgan?

i like the woolly look, but I use to cut Emms as well cause she use to get really hot with all the fur.

Thanks Tracey. I agree with you. I wish we could take it off and on like a hairpiece. So far it’s 3 for the Woolly Woolly look and 2 for whatever suits Morgan.

Hello Linda, Thanks for your kind words. Yes, Morgan has come along way. We all have in fact. I hate clipping him. he does have beautiful fur. But he gets so dirty and rastafarian. I’m afraid Dad isn’t meticulous about brushing him.

I always hate to see clipped Goldens because their hair is so glorious, but this summer I am thinking of perhaps clipping 2 of mine – they each had surgery earlier in the year Dec and Jan. My older boy had anal gland surgery for cancer and had to have half his feathers shaved off and a quarter of his plumey tail. The vet hated to do it because it was so beautiful – he is growing back now, but it is a consideration as he get so hot. And my girl had a big lipoma removed (thank God it was benign) but half her side was shaven, and I am really considering matching up the rest of her to the side because she is like Morgan – all that beautiful hair that is somewhat curly. Might make for better hair control in the house too. My 3rd boy I may leave alone. All of them have really thick coats as this winter was really cold here in MD. I just worried about sunburn on their skin.

Melanie, All of your concerns are valid. I know how cold it was Back East this winter. I have relatives there. Might I suggest just trimming the long hair that remains on your girl so she doesn’t look so drastic and yet is still protected on that side. I think your older boy can handle the “Punk” look but you could clip him also. As you’ve seen from Morgan, he’s not shaven and I think adequately protected from the sun. (I sure hope he is!) I would also suggest a strong sunblock for your girl or a light weight jacket to protect her until her fur grows in a bit. Another option is not to be outdoors during the worst times – between 10-2. Just like it’s recommended for people. As far as your third boy – you could leave his coat alone. Or you could have it trimmed so that they all look similar and no one sticks out.

I hope this helps. I’d love to see pictures of your kids and what you decided. And their names. Good luck. I know how much we worry about them.

      Best,
      Dan
